Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies including botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle counselling.

A Naturopathic Doctor is a primary care practitioner that seeks to restore and maintain optimum health in their patients by emphasizing nature’s inherent self-healing process. A Naturopathic Doctor views the individual as an integral whole including the physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors affecting health. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body and unfavourable lifestyle habits.

Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than disease as an entity. The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of the disease. This approach has proven successful in treating both chronic and acute conditions. Treatments are chosen based on the individual patient, not based on the generality of symptoms. Naturopathic doctors can also complement and enhance health care services provided by other health care professionals. They cooperate with other branches of medical science referring patients to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate. Naturopathic Doctors provide patients with a truly integrative form of health care.

We are happy to be able to offer Chelation Therapy in Prince George! Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (“EDTA”) is a synthetic amino acid first used in the 1940’s for treatment of heavy metal poisoning. Studies by the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council in the late 1960’s indicated that EDTA was considered possibly effective in the treatment of artery blockages caused by plaquing. Clinical experience with EDTA chelation therapy has convinced hundreds of medical and naturopathic physicians in North America that it is a safe and effective treatment for heart disease caused by plaque, as it consistently improves blood flow and relieves symptoms associated with the disease in greater than 80% of the patients treated. For further explanation of Chelation therapy see Website of Elmer Cranton, author of the Textbook of Chelation Therapy. In diabetic patients, who are at elevated risk for heart disease, it is an excellent preventative treatment for heart disease.

PLAQUEX TREATMENT
Along with Chelation Therapy we now offer Plaquex treatments. This treatment helps remove plaque for arteries, lower LDL cholesterol, increase HDL cholesterol, and more. It is widely recognized as being effective for that use as well as certain others, including emergency treatment of hypercalcemia and the control of ventricular arrhythmias associated with digitalis toxicity.

We are excited to introduce a new treatment for allergies and sensitivities at the Northern Centre for Integrative Medicine called LDA immunotherapy, short for Ultra Low Dose Enzyme Activated Immunotherapy.

Conventional allergy shots and treatments have proven to be very effective for certain pollen allergies and other specific types of allergy; however, they have little value for patients with allergies to multiple inhalants and have generally been ineffective for patients with autoimmune diseases, or food and chemical intolerances. LDA is an advanced immunotherapy and an effective alternative in the treatment of inhalant intolerances, certain autoimmune diseases, as well as sensitivity caused by foods, pollens, moulds, dust, and chemicals.

Living with acute or chronic pain is a daily struggle and finding relief can be challenging.

Prolotherapy is also known as nonsurgical ligament reconstruction, and is a treatment for chronic pain that is caused by chronic and acute ligament and tendon injury. The treatment is useful for many different types of musculoskeletal pain, including arthritis, back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, unresolved whiplash injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic tendonitis, partially torn tendons, ligaments and cartilage, degenerated or herniated discs and sciatica.

First, it is important to understand what the word prolotherapy itself means. “Prolo” is short for proliferation, because the treatment causes the proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament tissue in areas where it has become weak.(Ligaments are the structural “rubber bands” that hold bones to bones in joints. Ligaments can become weak or injured and may not heal back to their original strength or endurance. This is largely because the blood supply to ligaments is limited, and therefore healing is slow and not always complete. To further complicate this, ligaments also have many nerve endings and therefore the person will feel pain at the areas where the ligaments are damaged or loose. Tendons are the name given to tissue which connects muscles to bones, and in the same manner tendons may also become injured, and cause pain.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is the cutting edge treatment in acute and chronic injuries.

Platelet Rich Plasma is a simple, natural technique that assists the body’s natural healing process, buy stimulating the body to repair and rejuvenate an area of the body experiencing pain. A small amount of the patients blood is spun in a centrifuge, concentrating platelets. The PRP is injected into and around the point of injury, jump starting and significantly strengthening the healing process. Having a concentration of platelets four to ten times greater than the normal concentration of blood, there is a faster regeneration and healing.

The bodies first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelet cells to the area. Packed with growth and healing factors, platelets initiate repair and attract the critical assistance of stem cells. PRP’s natural healing process intensifies the body’s efforts by delivering a higher concentration of platelets directly into the area in need. Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of transmissible infection and a low risk of allergic reaction.

PRP injections stimulate ligament and tendon growth and repair. The response to treatment varies from individual to individual, and depends upon one’s healing ability. Most chronic tendon or ligament that fail to respond to the usual treatments will generally take several weeks to heal after PRP. Most patients responding to PRP have failed active rehabilitation (physiotherapy) because of pain exacerbation. If physiotherapy or exercise makes your pain worse, you may well be a strong candidate for PRP.

Because the goal of PRP therapy is to resolve pain through healing, it could prove to have lasting results. Initial improvement may be seen within two weeks, gradually increasing as the healing progresses. Research studies and clinical practice have shown PRP therapy to be very effective at relieving pain and returning patients to their normal lives. Both ultrasound and MRI images have shown definitive tissue repair after PRP therapy, confirming the healing process. The need for surgery can also be greatly reduced by treating injured tissues before the damage progresses and the condition is irreversible.

The first step is to get an evaluation by Dr. Boxtart to see if you are an appropriate candidate. For more information, see Prolotherapy.
